COMMON EMAIL PROBLEMS

Email playing up? Start here.

Open the question that best describes the problem and check the suggested settings before contacting support.

My password is not being accepted. What should I check?

First confirm that the full email address is being used as the username. Passwords are case-sensitive. Test the same details by signing into Webmail. If Webmail also rejects the password, the mailbox password may need to be reset.

How do I log in to Webmail?

Open Webmail in your browser.

  1. Enter your complete email address, for example name@yourbusiness.co.za.
  2. Enter the password for that mailbox. Passwords are case-sensitive.
  3. Select Webmail Login or press Enter.

If Webmail opens, your email address and password are correct. If your email application still does not work, check its incoming and outgoing server names, ports and security settings.

If you cannot log in, make sure you are using the mailbox password, not your website or WordPress password. If necessary, contact Select Web to have the mailbox password reset.

Never send your mailbox password by email.

Check that the outgoing server begins with smtp., uses port 465, has SSL/TLS enabled and requires authentication. The username must be the complete email address.

Check that the incoming server begins with mail., uses IMAP port 993 and has SSL/TLS enabled. Also confirm that the mailbox is not full.

This usually means the saved password is incorrect, the username is incomplete or one of the server settings is wrong. Remove any accidentally saved spaces and re-enter the mailbox password carefully.

Each device stores its own settings. Compare the username, server names, ports, encryption and authentication settings on the working device with those on the device giving trouble.

Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) is recommended when email is used on more than one device because messages remain synchronised with the server. Post Office Protocol (POP) downloads messages to a device and can cause differences between devices.

New messages may be rejected and returned to the sender. Delete unnecessary messages, empty deleted items and remove large attachments. Ask Select Web to check the mailbox usage if you cannot identify the cause.

Spam placement can be influenced by message content, attachments, sending patterns, domain authentication and the recipient’s mail system. Avoid bulk sending from an ordinary mailbox and ask Select Web to check the domain records if the problem continues.
